i was born a xicano militant i’m sitting in a chicano history class a bit bored and doodling on my notebook juan gomez-quinones otherwise known as el profe is lecturing on los mineros a majority of whom are yaqui, yoeme mexicanos from sonora, mexico but i’m sitting there thinking about a poem i read in fact, a poem i read in this class this class of chicano history of our native lineage and our native struggles for life but this poem this poem speaks of something different it shares a story of non-participation of passive observation because to this mexican american poet they declare that they were not born a chicano militant that they do not relate to our struggle for liberation perhaps they are ok to think this to think of non-militant alternatives but this capitalist, genocidal, and war- monging settler nation-state will never liberate our people our people who come from the color of the earth the color of la tierra our people who come from the world that is not white and not seeking global domination sure, chicano militancy is nothing one is born with el chicano no se nace se hace this is our proverb one rooted in political militancy because we know not all of our gente is ready but we know we can get there to bring down the towers of white supremacy to dismantle the anti-Indian sentiment of our own self-hate and to resurge from nuestra tierra as an indigenous people como un pueblo sin fronteras this journey begins with our spirit our spirit to be free to be free from the shackles of colonization to be free from the colonized mind where our trans relatives are free where our queer relatives are free where our black relatives are free where womyn are not burdened with patriarchal violence and where cisheteropatriarchy is demolished levantanse xican@s de abya yala our future rests in our articulation of liberation of all peoples and the spirit of our connection to la madre tierra and here i remain sitting in the confines of the university in a chicano history class learning strategies learning tactics learning from our xicano elder GQ i was born a xicano militant when i emerged from ceremony and was reminded of my connection to my ancestors my roots and the cosmos noxtin nomecayotzin Kristian Emiliano VasquezCollective member of Xicana Tiahui. Here we post our writings of thoughts we have, essays we have written, poetry, social commentary, news reports, polemics, and other kinds of writing. We hold it valuable to our hearts the written word in the spirit of the huehuetlahtolli, and we aspire to be intellectually on point as well as accessible to our gente from the barrio to the academy.
